Victoria’s Housing Crisis 

Victoria is facing a housing crisis. The population has been growing rapidly in recent years, and the city is struggling to keep up with the demand for housing. The lack of affordable housing options is a major concern for many residents, with prices continuing to rise and a low vacancy rate.

One solution that has been proposed is to build taller buildings in order to accommodate more people. This is not without its challenges, but having higher buildings is seen as one of the most viable solutions to the housing crisis.

Of course the problem of housing shortage in Greater Victoria will not be solved overnight, and this particular building alone will not resolve it. However, it is a step towards addressing the issue and once built will have a positive impact on residents for generations to come.

Women’s Transitional Housing

Women's transitional housing programs provide additional support services such as counselling, job training, and financial education to help women build the skills and resources they need to become self-sufficient. They also provide a sense of community and social support to help women through the process of recovery and transition. This can include childcare services, case management, and other resources to help women meet their basic needs and achieve their goals.

Almost 30% of the building will be reserved for affordable housing for women who have faced challenges and require a safe and comfortable environment for themselves and their children.

The true success of the building will be seen in the long-term when a woman who moves into the transitional housing is able to have her child attend a nearby school, chooses to stay in the building and moves into a rental unit, and eventually even becomes a homeowner.

Compact Living Benefits

As cities grow, they must evolve to meet the needs of their new residents. The biggest advantages of compact or high-density housing include:

Lower cost to maintain infrastructure

Building compact, high-density housing reduces the overall cost of maintaining public infrastructure, such as roads, services, and utilities, by reducing the amount of land that needs to be covered by these services. When residents live in high-density housing, the area that public services need to cover is more condensed, resulting in lower overall costs.

Less traffic

In high density housing developments, residents tend to own fewer cars as the area is often more walkable and offers greater access to public transportation. This leads to less traffic congestion compared to low-density areas where single-family homes often have two or more cars per household.

Reduces environmental destruction

Demand for single-family homes is among the top contributors to environmental destruction. However high density housing requires less land to be developed while providing more homes for more residents, resulting in less destruction of natural ecosystems.
